Fiona Sit Hoi-kei is the fastest rising star of Canto-pop. Having won numerous best newcomer accolades at various music awards last year, the 23-year-old Island School graduate is busy.

The path ahead seems smooth for Sit, but it wasn't always that way. 'Because I went to Island School, I'm used to speaking in English and when I first entered showbiz, I couldn't come up with a complete sentence in Cantonese,' she says.

'My company says I need to get out of that habit. They say that if I talk to people who don't come from the same background, they will see me as pretentious. Now, after a year's practice, I can handle a long interview without uttering any English.'

Sit has just started shooting her latest film, a romance directed by Joe Ma Wai-ho.

'This character is much more difficult to play compared with my last one,' she says. 'She's suffered illness and has to tackle heavy family issues - things I have no experience of.'

Sit plans to record another album this year. And her goal is to write Chinese lyrics for at least one of the songs. 'I really want to contribute something to my album, but my Chinese isn't up to standard,' she says.
