Phrases in the form of 'in ... of' are very common. 'In honour of' means 'to show respect to'. Similar phrases include 'in search of', (to look for something); 'in commemoration of', (honours the memory of someone or something); 'in recognition of' (showing admiration for an achievement); and 'in celebration of' (to celebrate).
