Wan chai's first Street Dragon Boat Festival last Sunday aimed to offer a fun outing for families. Ten dragon boat teams took part in the event in Lockhart Road from 12.30pm to 7pm. It was organised by the Wanchai District Council's Economic and Employment Committee and bc magazine. The contestants raced in dragon boats made from materials such as cardboard and plastic. Representatives from the bar-and-restaurant, Devil's Advocate, won the fastest team award. Proceeds from the registration fees will be donated to the charity group, St James' Settlement, which provides services for teenagers and the elderly. In addition to the dragon boat races, the carnival also featured 20 food booths which sold a variety of delicacies, including Mexican, Mediterranean and Mongolian dishes. There was also a lion dance led by master Ha Chiu-kin, as well as face-painting which cheered up young revellers. The organisers said they hoped the Wan Chai Street Dragon Boat Festival would become an annual event like the well-known Henley-on-Todd Regatta in Australia, and would attract both locals and tourists.
