Yesterday's mass rally saw a hodgepodge of concerns represented by a variety of activists from gays and lesbians to Disney 'hunters', flight attendants and domestic helpers.

Thousands of foreign domestic helpers dressed in red T-shirts formed a huge contingent near the front of the march, shouting slogans calling on the government to abolish the $400 levy on employers and to bring their minimum wage back to $3,670.

Groups advocating equality and non-discrimination for gays, lesbians and transsexuals also had a visible presence, with a giant rainbow flag and about 10,000 smaller rainbow flags handed out to marchers.

Tong Wing-sze, 27, said she joined the gay rights' groups along with her husband and two-year-old daughter because she believed in justice and equality for all. She called on Christian groups to be more tolerant of diversity.

'I am a Christian and I support minority rights because the Bible supports justice and the rights of minorities as well,' she said.

Conservative Christian groups such as the Society for Truth and Light had threatened to boycott the rally if gay rights formed part of the agenda.
