On reflection

Jin Peh

Mirrors are one of the most controversial tools in fung shui. Some masters employ them to reflect attacking energy, while others insist their use is overrated. However, it is universally accepted mirrors should never be placed inside and directly opposite the front door as positive and negative energies will be reflected back when it is opened. This will lead to obstacles in personal and professional lives.

Mirrors placed opposite windows can attract energy from outside. Picturesque mountains and clear water outside windows are ideal, but in Hong Kong there is a greater chance of seeing neighbouring buildings, some of which may be in need of renovation or be under construction. Do not hang a mirror in your home without taking into account what it reflects. Mirrors should not reflect the occupants when they are asleep in the bedroom and should be hung with discretion in the dining room.

Some people like to hang small round mirrors on the insides of windows to fend off the sharp corners of buildings. This is not recommended - drawing the curtains or blinds is more effective. Such placement is usually unwarranted because the structures outside are relatively innocuous. Poor placement can cause more harm than good. If in doubt, seek the opinion of a fung shui consultant.
