Toshiba SDP-1600: This portable DVD player has an eye-catching jet black finish. Its 18cm colour display enables crisp, clear viewing of movies or photos from VCDs DVDs and DVD-R discs.

The SDP-1600 also has a zoom function which magnifies on-screen images so you can get rid of the black bars on widescreen movies, although this means you also lose part of the picture.

(Price: $2,480)

Casio Exilim EX-S500: The EX-S500 puts Casio at the forefront of the ultra-thin digital camera market. At 13.7mm, it has the thinnest body of any digital camera on the market. However, unlike its slimmed-down rivals, the EX-S500's 3X zoom lens isn't internal, so it protrudes out of the body when the camera is turned on. It comes with a 5.5cm TFT LCD screen, 5 megapixel imaging and also an image stabiliser which is handy because the unit is very light and thus susceptible to shaky hands. (Price: $3,480)

Canon MV830i: This entry level camcorder is priced cheaper than some digital still cameras. As such, the MV830i offers basic features with few manual options and an 800,000-pixel CCD sensor. It does, however, come with a 6cm LCD screen, supports

16:9 widescreen shots and has 20X optical and 400X digital zooming capabilities. The unit uses MiniDV tapes for recordings but also has an SD card slot. (Price: $3,480)
