Updated at 6.46pm: Power supplies to some shops in a Kwai Chung estate had not been restored for more than 24 hours after two power failures on Monday, news reports on Tuesday said. Residents of Kwai Fong Terrace estate said the first disruption occurred at 8.30am on Monday. Power initially resumed at 10pm but failed again at 11.30pm. On Tuesday afternoon, power was restored to residential flats - although not to some shops, local radio reported. A consultant with the estate owners' committee said small shops on the ground floor were expected to have their power back on later on Tuesday. But he said power to a church, restaurant and Jockey Club centre would not be restored until next Monday - because they used up so much power. The consultant said maintenance works for the 22-year-old estate had begun after the owners' committee had recently collected $200,000. A food vendor told local radio he had to dump food because it had become contaminated during the power cuts. He said he had endured at least four power failures over the past five years, but Monday's was the worst.
