Stand mixers are also known as stationary or heavy-duty mixers. As their names imply, they're strong,
heavy mixers that need their own bench space.
Although they're expensive and seem like a luxury, they'll save you a lot of physical labour if you enjoy making breads and heavy cake batters that will wear out the motor on a hand-held mixer.
What are they? Stand mixers have a motor encased in a heavy, stable base. The basic model comes with a mixing bowl that fits into the base and three mixing attachments - a whip (for cream and egg whites), a flat paddle (for standard pastry doughs and cake batters) and a dough hook (for breads).
Most mixers have other attachments (such as juicer, meat mincer and blender) that can be purchased separately.
