The world famous Harlem Globetrotters will run their first ever basketball summer camp in Hong Kong at West Island School next week.
The Globetrotters are an exhibition basketball team who combine athleticism and comedy. Founded by Abe Saperstein in 1927 in the US, over the years the team has toured more than 100 countries and played over 20,000 games.
Until the late 1930s, the Globetrotters were a serious competitive side, but they gradually worked comic routines into their play until they became known more for entertaining than competing.
The Globetrotters often perform incredible acts of
co-ordination and skilful handling using one or more basketballs, such as passing or juggling balls between players, balancing or spinning balls on their fingertips, and unusual or difficult shots.
Famous Globetrotters have included NBA greats Wilt Chamberlain and Reece 'Goose' Tatum, as well as Meadowlark Lemon, Nat 'Sweetwater' Clifton, and Connie 'The Hawk' Hawkins.
To counter the criticism that they do not play real basketball, in recent years the Trotters have played games against college sides and specially selected teams such as Magic Johnson's All Stars.
