A new translation of Jules Verne's The Adventures of Captain Hatteras by William Butcher of the Government and International Studies Department of the Hong Kong Baptist University will be out tomorrow. Dr Butcher is a renowned Jules Verne scholar and his book is the first critical edition and complete translation of the French writer's polar adventure stories. Based on recently discovered documentation, the book gives readers an insight into Verne's sources and inspiration. Dr Butcher analysed biographical sources. He details the hundreds of real-life figures cited by Verne. The new book will include original and censored material, as well as information about the Arctic expeditions at the time that so captured Verne's imagination. The 464-page book is published by Oxford University Press as a World Classic.
