FORMAL, regular meetings between police and schools should be made mandatory to curb triad infiltration, an outspoken Fight Crime Committee (FCC) member has suggested.

Mr Justine Wong Chun called on the Education Department to require all primary and secondary schools to co-operate with police.

A working group under the FCC, which is chaired by Chief Secretary Sir David Ford, has proposed measures to tackle the problem of triad influence in schools.

Suggestions, including increasing police presence near schools before and after school hours and improving liaison among police, teachers, parents and school social workers, are on trial.

However, Mr Wong doubted if the measures could be fully implemented because many schools were not willing to approach or to be approached by police as they thought this would affect their image.

''Even if students are threatened by triad gangs, or are themselves triad-related, schools keep cases secret and refuse to report to police.

''This sabotages police anti-triad work and reinforces the triad influence,'' he said.
