Bangsar is where Kuala Lumpur's chic and trendy go to be seen and where high-margin businesses have pushed out the family-run provisions shops and mini markets of old. Now one of the  Malaysian capital's hottest suburbs, it's party central - and woe betide anyone who tries to find a parking spot on a weekend evening.

La Bodega Tapas

A popular choice for meeting friends, with its vibe helped along by  South American music,  La Bodega's menu includes button mushrooms sauteed in garlic and olive oil (M$10 or $20), grilled lamb cutlets gratinated with garlic mayonnaise (M$9), tiger prawns sauteed in olive oil and garlic (M$14) and eggplant with olive oil, chilli and herbs (M$8). For the seriously hungry there's paella with prawns, chicken, mussels and clams (M$36 for two). With six years in Bangsar, La Bodega  now encompasses a lounge, a delicatessen and a fine-dining room.

Restaurant Fu Yu

Fu Yu recently evolved from a basic coffee shop into a modern, air-conditioned restaurant, but  with the atmosphere of a Chinese noodle house.  Fondly dubbed 'Cheap Charlie' by its regulars (tell any taxi driver 'Cheap Charlie in Bangsar'), Fu Yu serves Cantonese delectables such as roast pork rib (M$16), lemon chicken (M$19), butter sea prawns (M$36) and house special bean curd (M$14). All prices indicate dishes sufficient for  up to six people.

The Talk

Don't let the simple, unassuming facade fool you. Inside the Talk  are dishes such as sizzling oysters (M$32), black pepper Kobe beef (M$95 for 100g), reverse soft shell crab maki (M$32) and sashimi for two (M$48), all flown in from Japan. Upstairs is a two-storey art gallery run by the restaurant owners that promotes young local artists.

Planter Jim's

A standing Buddha with palms pressed together and the soothing sound of running  water greet you at the entrance to Planter Jim's. The food is Thai in inspiration, with appetisers such as mieng kum (M$16 for two) and aromatic crispy duck (M$25), mains such as grilled beef red curry (M$20) and chargrilled king prawns (M$40) and desserts such as mango and sticky rice (M$8).

Devi's Corner

In the cheap, filling and dependable category is Devi's Corner, a south Indian eatery that's open 24 hours a day.  A dozen or more curry dishes are laid out, buffet style. Rice with meat and two veg costs about M$5.50 and the bread assortment includes roti chanai (80 sen), thosai (M$1), chapati (M$1.20) and puri (M$1.50 for two).

Rocky Restaurant

Rocky Restaurant is a classic family-run Malaysian coffee shop offering such local favourites as nasi lemak (M$3.50), fried kueh teow (noodles fried with cockles and bean sprouts, M$3)   and  ice kacang (a sweet shaved ice dessert, M$2.50). Open for breakfast and lunch only.
