PolyU began as Hong Kong Polytechnic, a post-secondary educational institution specialising in practical subjects such as accountancy, design and business management. In 1994, it was given university status and renamed. Continuing its history, PolyU's programmes in accountancy, design and hotel and tourism management are well respected. It is the territory's largest university in student population, with about 22,000 full-time and part-time students studying on the Hunghom campus. PolyU has only one residential block, housing 3,004 students. Residents are grouped into nine halls.

Last year, about 97 per cent of graduates from PolyU were hired or pursued further studies. One hundred per cent employment rate was recorded in international shipping, transport logistics, financial services, optometry and nursing.

Pauline Pang chose PolyU because of its unique four-year English Language Teaching (ELT) programme. 'I was attracted to this programme because it combines my two interests, English and education,' Ms Pang said. 'The programme allows me to major in English and gain a background in teaching under a bachelor of arts degree.' Small lectures, some with only 28 students were a norm on the programme , which was crucial to helping her learn, she said.
