When the options for the next stage of your education are still being considered, thinking ahead to university can seem a long way off. But getting an early start on researching the options will help you make informed decisions
Founded in 1910, the University of Hong Kong was the first and only tertiary institution in the city until 1963, when the Chinese University of Hong Kong was formally recognised as a university. Its long history means HKU is one of the most prestigious universities in Hong Kong, with many distinguished alumni such as former chief secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang and legislator Martin Lee Chu-ming. The university has about 19,000 students, of whom 11,700 are undergraduates. HKU is acclaimed for its medicine, law, arts and humanities, and architecture faculties. One noticeable characteristic of the institution is that English is the medium of instruction, and 45 per cent of its academic staffs are recruited from overseas. This year, 98 per cent of HKU graduates were either employed or continued studying.

Sue Lim had to choose between three colleges. She chose Hong Kong University because she had heard its academic programmes were not as demanding as those at other institutions, and it allowed students to have a life outside college. After two years at HKU as a double major in accounting and finance, her experiences mirror what she had heard. HKU emphasises the importance of a student's well-rounded development, Ms Lim said. 'The college tells us we should study, get a part-time job, date, get involved in clubs and live in the halls - do these five things before we graduate, even in the first year!' The university's long history of traditions, especially the traditions of its halls and other activities, were the best things about it, Ms Lim said.
