A GROUP of elderly people in Sha Tin staged a protest yesterday to complain that the Housing Authority was ignoring their need to be moved from temporary housing areas. Brandishing banners which claimed that the authority had lied and reneged on its promises, the group sat outside the authority's offices in Sha Kok Estate for four hours. The peaceful protesters claimed they had been promised six months ago that they would be moved from temporary to permanent housing. They warned that as the months passed they faced increasing danger from thieves and potential fire hazards. The elderly people, who all live alone, said there were plenty of vacant flats in public housing estates, and accused the authority of deliberately not helping them. They called on District Board members and legislators to support their claims and to help them get a settlement with the authority.
