The Sea Breeze is a perfect summer cooler, yet it's so simple to make (it's one part vodka mixed with two parts cranberry juice and two parts pineapple juice) that it seems, much like the Screwdriver, a little generous to call it a cocktail.
Perhaps that's why, unlike most world-renowned cocktails, there are no competing claims to have invented it.
It seems to have just appeared. Originally, it was based on gin but, like most mixes these days, vodka has become the spirit of choice.
Its simplicity is what makes the Breeze brilliant. It's great in pitchers for summer parties and barbecues,
but more importantly, even the most amateur mixologist can play around with the recipe to create their own personalised version.
Experimenting with the Breeze is exactly what the bartenders have been doing at Bamboo, a Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant and bar in Lan Kwai Fong. Bamboo has an excellent but underused terrace that is a good spot to relax over fruit-juice-based cocktails such as the Langkawi or Malaysian Breeze.
