If you've trawled Mongkok and Wan Chai for the perfect tiles and feel you've wasted your time, consider designing your own or having them designed for you. Someone who can help is Dominic Crinson, whose speciality is 'designing imagery to be output via computer onto various surfaces such as ceramic tiles and floor tiles'. According to Crinson's sole distributor in China, Roger Ho of Silhouette (tel: 6430 3943), images can be produced to fit personal specifications and scaled to any size for everything from small splashbacks to large public works. Crinson's website (www.crinson.com) is sure to spark the imagination with a gallery of work, including examples from residential and commercial projects. One of the most striking is the New York cityscape (bottom), although his 'ediblescapes', such as one featuring a giant rambutan (below and left), may suit Asian tastes more. Customised wall tiles cost $86 for 10cm x 10cm tiles and $267 for 20cm x 20cm tiles; minimum order is one metre.
