If Taiwan declared independence, the mainland would carry out bombings, blockades and attacks with troops to stop it, yesterday's edition of the Hong Kong-based Ta Kung Pao quoted a mainland military expert as saying.

It said the unnamed National Defence University professor made the remarks at a lecture in Shenzhen on Monday.

'The peaceful reunification policy of the Chinese government has not and will not change,' the expert said. 'But peaceful reunification can only be possible if Taiwan does not violate the Anti-Secession Law.

'Once Taiwan declares independence, the People's Liberation Army will use military force as prescribed in the Anti-Secession Law to defend national unity.'

The expert said mainland military strategy in such a case could be summarised as bombing, a blockade and attack with troops.
