The coach of Hong Kong's newly crowned world champion junior girls' team said yesterday that the future relocation of training facilities could be a blessing in disguise for the sport.
Tony Choi Yuk-kwan led the team, who comprised three players all under the age of 19, back to the SAR yesterday after their victory in the world junior team championships in Herentals, Belgium - the first-ever world junior title for Hong Kong.
He said he had a positive outlook on the relocation, which will happen because of the Hong Kong Sports Institute's closure to accommodate the 2008 Olympic equestrian events.
'This is a chance for us to get an upgrade on squash's original training base at the HKSI as the facilities there have become old after serving athletes for over 20 years,' Choi said, adding that the move would be provisional.
'The team can also make use of this occasion to ask for more resources to improve the standard of the players.
'They could include subsidies for training overseas in the coming two years so that they can reach the world standard with more international exposure.'
