Lights, camera, dial! Nokia and the Discovery Network are trying to promote the idea of shooting a film ... on your mobile phone?

The companies have just announced their Mobile First Time Filmmakers Contest 2005. Fledgling directors are invited to send in a photo or video lasting no longer than nine seconds with a brief description of something that 'best defines the values and hopes of their community'.

It could be a local store, a street sign, an animal, anything under the sun, really.

Fifteen applicants will then be shortlisted and flown to Singapore next month. There, they will get a special Nokia N90 and a lesson in how to use the high-performance multimedia device to create their own high-quality mobile films. The winner will walk away with a grand prize of US$10,000.

The contest is open to anyone aged 18 or above, and the deadline for submissions is September 4. Go to www.mobifilms.net for more information. Just one warning though, don't leave the phone on vibration or you might get a fuzzy picture if someone calls while you're filming.
