A second aircraft maintenance hangar is to be built at Chek Lap Kok, creating more than 450 new jobs over the next three to five years. The 13,000 square-metre facility, due to be completed by the end of next year, will be able to accommodate two wide-bodied aircraft, and undertake all maintenance and modification work handled at the airport.

A new maintenance office expected to be in operation early next year will also be built adjacent to the cargo apron, improving services to freight customers of the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company. Investment in construction amounts to about $320 million.

Attending the ground-breaking ceremony yesterday, Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said he expected passenger and cargo traffic at the airport to reach record highs this year.
