While LeBron James thanks God for his talent, the winner of the Miss Chinese International 2001, Bernice Liu Bik-yi (left), thanks her father for helping her get to where she is today.

He gave up his business to be with his daughter when she decided to leave Prince Rupert, in British Columbia, Canada, for Hong Kong to become an actress. Because Liu, 26, can't read Chinese, her father reads every script and writes out the English phonetics.

CitySeen spoke to Liu at the TRESemme launch. 'When you hear stories about TVB working their actors very hard, it is true,' she says. 'We work on a 37-hour clock, so we often work till the wee hours of the morning.'

But the starlet has just signed another five-year contract with the station. So why sign your life away again with such a demanding company?

Liu says the upside is she can now afford her own flat. She recently bought an apartment in Tseung Kwan O, which she shares with her father and her new dog, a miniature poodle.

Liu is a good example that, with some guidance, it is possible to make an honest living in showbiz. Taking that leap from starlet to superstar is another story.
