So Kiu, 76, was declared dead at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin shortly after midnight yesterday.

Her 48-year-old son, who was arrested for injuring his mother after the incident in their flat at Lai Yiu Estate at 12.30pm on Saturday, has been admitted to a mental hospital.

Police said he was unfit to give a statement yesterday.

The case has been reclassified as murder. On the night of the incident his arrest was not related to his mother's death and he had not been charged.

Police said the attack followed an argument between So, who had been bedridden since suffering heatstroke several years ago, and her son over money in the family's unit in Lok Yiu House.

The elderly woman was lying on a bed at the time of the incident, a police spokesman said.
