Students in adversity

Difficulties in their young lives could have discouraged two of the straight-A students. Instead, they drew motivation from the experience.

For Aaron Yam Tsz-ho, 17, the sudden death of his father two years ago was devastating, but he did not let it derail his studies. 'My father's death had a huge impact on me,' said the La Salle College student (pictured). 'I did not skip school at that time, but I was very depressed for a few months. Luckily, with my mother's support, I quickly recovered and became strong again.'

His tip for success is preparation. 'I have been preparing for my classes in advance ever since I was in primary school,' he said. 'I also drafted a study timetable for myself during the HKCEE preparation period.'

Compared to the sudden death of his father, the exam seemed a trivial matter, the teen said. 'Now I would like to tell my father that I can really do it.'
