THE issue of whether there was lack of care by a hospital in the treatment of a policewoman has been raised at the inquest into her death.
Constable Cathy Wong Sze-wai, 20, died four days after being admitted to Queen Mary Hospital, following a failed brain operation.
Wong suffered a serious head injury while ''playing around'' on a colleague's police motorcycle. She was thrown off and cracked her head against concrete in a Wan Chai car park.
Coroner Rodney Venning was ready to close the inquest but, on receiving an application for further evidence submitted by the dead woman's mother, Wong Chung-yee, he agreed to call a further witness.
A senior medical officer from Queen Mary Hospital is expected to explain today exactly what treatment Wong received.
As Mrs Wong concentrated her evidence on what happened at the hospital, Mr Venning interrupted her and said: ''An in-depth investigation into the management of your daughter in the hospital from her admittance up to the operation is relevant only if there is the possibility of a lack of care situation being applicable.
''I understand the concern, but the question is could the operation have been done any earlier,'' Mr Venning said. He said this was unlikely because Wong had appeared to have been in a satisfactory condition.
