Walter Cronkite's mother dies at 101

HELEN Fritsche Cronkite, mother of Walter Cronkite, died on Sunday at her home in Washington. She was 101.

The cause was congestive heart failure, said Julie Sukman, Cronkite's executive assistant at CBS News.

Helen Cronkite was born and grew up in Leavenworth, Kansas. She went to college in Pennsylvania. She moved to Washington in 1953 to be near her son, her only child. Helen Cronkite's marriage to her husband, also named Walter, ended in divorce.

In addition to her son, surviving are three grandchildren, Nancy, Kathy Cronkite-Ikard and Walter Cronkite III.
