What: Established in 1976, the charity has five social centres throughout Hong Kong  offering a wide variety of community and social services to children, youths, the elderly  new arrivals, disabled people and other disadvantaged groups.

Volunteer jobs for teenagers include visiting elderly people during festive times or helping children from poor families with their homework. Students above Form Five can help  with the Uncle Long Leg Letter Box by  replying to letters  from children who write to 'Uncle Long Leg' for advice.

'I've  visited centres for elderly people. Many young people have the impression that old people are very stubborn and are quite difficult to deal with. But I've  found that elderly people are like children as they get older.

They are very eager to learn. I've   taught seniors  to use a computer.  They were very happy  to learn  how to use a computer mouse  and surf  the internet.

I've  also visited cancer patients. Through talking to them,  I realised that  we must treasure life.

As well, I've  helped lead  teenagers in a camping trip.  When I assisted in running a family camp,  I witnessed parents preparing everything for their children and  taking good care of them during the trip. It reminded me of my own parents, who also took good care of me when I was young.

Each  experience I've had while volunteering has helped me to become more mature.  Maintaining good relationships with  others are very important because  if you  feel sad, knowing that someone is there to help  makes you feel stronger and more determined.

My aim  in doing volunteer services  is to help people. You need to have empathy. For example, when you see people who are upset,  you should try to understand the reason behind their behaviour, rather than getting mad at them.

I'm  now doing counselling services for HKCEE students.  In the past, social workers  had consoled me during  difficult times  arising from the exam, so   I'm  doing my part to help others.'
