What the acronyms mean

Doctors can quote their qualifications on their business cards and inside their clinics. But these qualifications are always in abbreviated form, which means very little to those outside the profession.

The following decodes some of the more commonly quoted qualifications, according to a 46-page list provided by the Medical Council:

MS (HK) - Master of Surgery, the University of Hong Kong

M Med Sc (HK) - Master of Medical Sciences, the University of Hong Kong

MD (CUHK) - Doctor of Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong

FHKAM (Ophthalmology) - Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (Ophthalmology)
