Fourth free newspaper to hit city streets aims to fill weekend gap left by Metro
Hong Kong is turning into the land of the free ... newspapers. Sing Tao News Corp plans to launch a free weekend publication next month to be distributed in MTR stations, according to a source.
The first edition of Express Post is due out on September 17 and will be the city's fourth free paper. It will publish on Saturdays initially but Sing Tao has the option to produce a Sunday paper at a later stage.
'Sing Tao has signed a contract with MTR for three years. Express Post will get access to MTR stations and targets more than a million weekend leisure readers,' the source said.
It would be a general newspaper covering local news, features and entertainment and would be supported by content from various Sing Tao publications, the source added.
The MTR opened bidding for a Saturday and Sunday publication last year when Metro, the city's first free daily, stopped publishing at weekends as it found the business unprofitable.
'We think Express Post will be a sure win,' said the source, adding that the paper would provide a new market for weekend advertisers.
