THE HONG Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is setting up a new department of health technology and informatics (HTI) in response to the fast-growing biomedical engineering industry.
Undergraduate programmes offered by HTI are unique in the territory. The BSc (Hons) Programme in Medical Laboratory Science is fully accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science in Britain, and the BSc (Hons) Programme in Radiography is reconstructed to one generic programme that covers both medical imaging and radiation therapy.
Graduates from the BSc (Hons) Programme in Biomedical Engineering will be qualified for both the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and the Hong Kong Society of Certified Prosthetist-Orthotists. This dual recognition was achieved by PolyU alone in Hong Kong.
Students can also strive for a double degree in applied biology and biotechnology if they agree to spend one more year on a self-financed basis.
The biomedical engineering course will take in 30 students while the other two have places for 35 students.
'The establishment of this new department will help meet the community's needs for professional manpower with a broader perspective,' said Arthur Mak, Chair Professor and Head of HTI.
