For those seeking an artistically minded place to retreat to from the city, a new cafe-bookshop has just opened in Central. Close to Graham Street market, 3boxes houses a selection of rare second-hand (mainly art) books and features comfortable white sofas on which you can relax with a cup of herbal tea and a slice of homemade cake. It also hosts film screenings and other cultural activities at weekends. The cafe's art co-ordinator, writer Huang Pao-lien, says everyone is welcome to spend some time in 3boxes even if they are not buying anything. 'There aren't really any relaxing cafe-bookshops in Hong Kong, so we hope to provide a private space for people to relax or read,' she says. 3boxes is a joint venture by several people who are active in Hong Kong's art world, such as director Shu Kei and artistic designer Man Lim-chung. Consequently, the walls are adorned with photographs and artwork by local artists. 3boxes is open daily from noon to 9pm at 35 Graham Street, Central, tel: 2850 4822.
