Kumon Hong Kong Instructor Florence Chan won two awards at the Conference Instructor Award Ceremony, Kumon Asia & Oceania Instructors' 2005. Her centre has the most students completing the Kumon English programme and the highest percentage of students studying Level J and above.
Though her centre is one of the most successful in Hong Kong, she prefers not to take all the credit.
'Education is never individual work. We all work as a team. Our assistants, staff and students work very hard.'
Ms Chan became an instructor in 1992. She said her involvement in Kumon began after her son started with the programme. She did not understand the methods and objectives of Kumon, and thought her son's improvement was relatively slow.
She called the office hoping to learn more about Kumon, and found that its methods were different from other tutorial schools because it developed a child's potential to the fullest. She then decided to become an instructor.
'In these 13 years of teaching, I have been amazed at the potential of every student. They often surprise me by doing much better than my expectations. One of my Primary Two students can already do Secondary Four mathematics.
'I have taught many of my students for more than a decade. We have built up a close relationship. Seeing them improving year by year and then growing up into respectable adults is a thrilling experience. I am very proud of my students.'
