The Kowloon City area is a haven for people seeking authentic Thai food without having their finances wrecked like a Bangkok bar after a Tony Jaa rampage.

For Thai residents, the taste of home can be had at a trendy outlet at the southern end of Nam Kok Road, where cheap eats abound.

Pee Long Thai Traditional Food

Buzz: Popular with non-Thais, this mid-range restaurant is not the cheapest in the area but attracts such a large crowd that you may have to queue to get a seat. Expect few frills as diners share tables with strangers and vacate seats quickly after their meals.

A smorgasbord of dishes showcase different regional Thai cuisines. There is tom yum goong (hot and sour prawn soup) and pla neung (steamed fish) from central Thailand. From the north is yam nam neung (sour pork salad), while the Isaan tradition of the northeast offers som tum (papaya salad).

Pee Long was the second Thai restaurant set up in Hong Kong and while the business is no longer owned by Wangsoh Wanida and her family, the restaurant is in good hands as the current proprietor is a former employee.
