Cheung Chau Band Show
Many 19-year-olds take life easy, concentrating on having fun, with a bit of study or work thrown in to please the parents. But Benny Cheng Tze-king has set himself a target that's keeping him awake at night.
The Cheung Chau resident is the organiser of this Saturday's Cheung Chau Band Show (CCBS) 2005, which will bring together seven local independent bands performing festival style at an open-air venue.
Although Cheng has been involved with the CCBS since it started in 2003, this is the first time ultimate responsibility has rested on his shoulders, and he's invested a sizeable chunk of his own savings in the festival.
'The hardest part is having to deal with the unexpected,' says Cheng, who's putting the concert together while working part-time as a waiter at Le Parisien in IFC. 'The show was originally going to be held indoors in a school, but there was some problem with the power supply, so we had to move outdoors.'
The new venue is the Sung Yau Lee basketball court and the threat of poor weather adds to Cheng's stress. He's concerned that conditions similar to those that drenched this year's Glastonbury music festival in Britain could wash out the event. Despite the headaches, Cheng says the outdoor venue (weather permitting) may well create a better atmosphere than an indoor concert.
