If we're to judge this show by its publicity materials, then Retrospective Exhibitionist spells provocation and controversy. Miguel Gutierrez, the creator and performer of this production, is a New York-based artist whose works have been described at various times as uncomfortable, gruesome, absorbing and forceful. He's also one of the brightest creative sparks on the global contemporary dance scene.
Retrospective Exhibitionist is a solo piece in which Gutierrez takes his audience 'through his own real and imagined performance history, excavating to find the vulnerability of what it is to be watched by others'.
'At the heart of my work is a burning desire to marry concept and kinetics,' he once said.
'I try to draw the connection between intimate experiences and relationships to a larger global context. I believe that the dancing body has its own inherent intelligence, and that it speaks a language which has its own logic.
