A seven-year-old boy was chopped by two masked men in Kwai Ching last night. The attack occurred shortly before 6pm when the boy, accompanied by his grandmother, was on his way to a private tutorial school near their home in Lei Mun Shue Estate.

'When they approached the ground floor of the 5th block of the estate, two masked men, who looked in their 20s, wore black T-shirts, black jeans and caps, suddenly came out,' a police spokesman said. They pushed the boy to the ground and chopped his right arm and leg before fleeing.

The boy, with two wounds to his arm and four to his leg, was taken to Yan Chai Hospital, where his condition was serious last night.

A police source said the boy's father was a manager of a Japanese restaurant chain and his mother was a cosmetics saleswoman.

The two knives were found on a slope near the site of the attack. Initial investigations indicated the attackers had lain in ambush, the source said. No motive for the attack has been discovered.

Meanwhile, a quarrel over a missing mobile phone sparked a fight between two brothers in their Western flat, which was followed by the collapse and death of the younger brother on Wednesday, police said.
