Australian ace Tom Gaffney takes to the air at the Hong Kong Wakefest championship at Tai Po Waterfront Park yesterday.
The 24-year-old was in a class of his own as he easily won the competition, impressing the judges with his eye-catching tricks, including a back-roll, an invert and a front-roll with a spin.
'I would have performed even better had the water not been so rough,' said Gaffney.
The Aussie defeated Hong Kong's Wan Ka-choi, who was nonetheless delighted to finish second. Johnson Hui was third. 'Gaffney's definitely better than me,' admitted 22-year-old Wan, who is a full-time wakeboarder and the 2004 China champion.
'He performed really well despite the rough conditions.'
Five years ago, Gaffney was a surfer but switched to wakeboarding because 'it is more of a challenge'.
