Despite sending its strongest-ever squad, Hong Kong was unable to achieve its goal at the 23rd University Games in Izmir, Turkey, earlier this month.

The city hoped for medals in windsurfing and tennis, but when it really mattered, the athletes from other nations were too strong.

'It's disappointing not to bring a medal home, but we have to look on the positive side and say that the athletes did their best and gained some valuable experience,' said SAR delegation head, Patrick Chan Ping-cheung.

'Sherry Tsai broke two Hong Kong swimming records in her events, and overall, I am proud of the athletes - they did a good job representing Hong Kong to the world.'

Hong Kong's hopes for its first-ever medal at the Games mainly rested on windsurfer Vicky Chan Wai-kei. The 24-year-old, who won the World University Windsurfing Championships at the same venue a year ago, competed in the women's mistral event.

However, the University of Hong Kong student finished fifth overall, scoring 29 points from 12 races. She won the last race but she ended up two points behind the bronze medallist from Poland. Germany won gold, while Italy took silver.

In tennis, mixed doubles pair Polly Lam Po-kuen and Brian Hung Lap-hei were knocked out in the quarter-finals by the top seeds and eventual champions from Taiwan, Chuang Chia-jung and Chen Ti.
