A-Max Holdings' 19.99 per cent owned Greek Mythology Entertainment Group will scrap its plan to build a US$50 million casino resort in Cambodia.
The cancellation comes just two months after Greek Mythology signed a memorandum of understanding with Thailand-based BOP Entertainment Group to develop Cambodia's largest casino resort in Poipet, on the Thai border.
Michael Chan King-ming, vice-chairman of Greek Mythology and chairman of A-Max, said the investment in Poipet would be adversely affected if, as expected, the Thai government legalises gambling.
'Because nearly 98 per cent of the gamblers in Poipet come from Thailand, once the Thai government grants casino licences over the next five years, Poipet will suffer from a fall in customers,' he said.
Greek Mythology decided at a board meeting yesterday not to pursue the project, he said.
Shares at A-Max rose 5.77 per cent to close at 55 cents yesterday.
