The Cave (English with Chinese subtitles) (IIA): Thriller set in the Romanian forest where scientists stumble upon a cave system that contains not just a new ecosystem but an entirely new species.

The Ghost (Korean with Chinese subtitles) (IIB): Horror tale about Ji-won, a university student who has amnesia and is tormented by her dreams. Her memory holds the key to the mysterious deaths that are happening around her. Starring Kim Ha-neul  and Ryu Jin.  Not reviewed.

On The Mountain of Tai Hang Putonghua (Chinese Subtitles) (IIB): Director Wei Lian's film about the war against Japan that follows commander-in-chief Zhu De and the Eighth Route Army to the battlefront. Starring Wong Wufu,  Xu Guangming,  Tony Leung Ka-fai.  Not reviewed.

General Releases

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Cantonese and English versions) (I): Tim Burton  casts a magic spell over this adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, with Johnny Depp shining as the eccentric chocolate king Willy Wonka.

Doraemon - Nobita and the Wind Wizard (Cantonese - no subtitles) (I): The world's favourite little smiling manga creation is back for more adventures, with best friend Nobita in tow.

Drink Drank Drunk (Cantonese) (I): Director Derek Yee's summer offering that pits Miriam Yeung together with Daniel Wu. She plays a Hong Kong's  'beer girl'; he plays a down-and-out young man looking for love.

Hidden Blade (Japanese) (IIB): Director Yoji Yamada follows up Twilight Samurai with this tale  of a lowly samurai who falls for the wrong woman and has his loyalties to his clan questioned.

Land of the Dead (IIB): Great value from zombie master George A. Romero,  who returns with a new take on the genre - this time the living dead get smart and move in on a city ruled by a crazy money-grabber (Dennis Hopper),  who is protected by two guys (Simon Baker and John Leguizamo)   who long for more out of life.

Madagascar (Cantonese and English versions) (I): Animated hijinks following a band of New York zoo inhabitants (led by Ben Stiller as a lion and Chris Rock as a zebra) who plot an escape - but find themselves washed up in the wilds of Madagascar.

Marathon (Korean with Chinese and English subtitles) (I): Jo Seung-woo  plays an autistic man who finds his calling in long-distance running. Kim Mi-sook steals the show as  his strong-willed mother who strives to endow his life with dignity and purpose. This year's South Korean box-office smash.

Mean Spirit (French) (IIB): Architect Porel and his trophy wife Chrystele are expecting their first child. When Porel is in a car accident that kills a man the same day that Chrystele gives birth, the victim is then reborn as Porel's vindictive son.

Racing Stripes (Cantonese version) (I): Fun for the kids as a zebra (voiced by Chet Lam Yat-fung) battles against the odds to prove he's as good as any racehorse going around.

Red Eye (IIA): Director Wes Craven's thriller about a woman (Rachel McAdams) taken captive on a night flight to Miami by a man (Cillian Murphy) who is an operative in a plot to kill the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security.

Seven Swords (Putonghua and Cantonese) (IIB): Tsui Hark  directs an swirling epic that centres around seven swords- men (including Leon Lai, Donnie Yen and Charlie Young) who  fight to save a village from  evil mercenaries.

Documentary Screening: A State of Mind: The documentary provides a rare glimpse into life  in North Korea. The filmmakers follow two  gymnasts  over eight months in the lead up to the Mass Games, the biggest performance on Earth with 100,000 performers.
