Singaporean singer Stefanie Sun Yanzi has come a long way since she burst onto the Taiwanese music scene five years ago.
Even though she made a name for herself with a debut release entitled The Sky is Gloomy, the forecast for her career was altogether much brighter. She received many awards for best newcomer in Taiwan and other parts of Asia, and was also named one of the top 10 artists by MTV Chinese just one year after she entered show business.
Sun is now making a return to Hong Kong after her debut appearances last September. The singer was initially sceptical about her popularity here, but tickets to last year's shows sold out in two days.
Sun was brought into the industry by Singaporean star-makers Li Sisong and Li Weisong, but there's nothing manufactured about her. She's earned herself a reputation as a talented singer-songwriter and a skilled pianist. Despite her diminutive frame, Sun has a sensational and wide-ranging voice.
Her voice allows her to sing formulaic love ballads, as well as experiment with styles such as folk, world music, Indian music, tango and soft rock. She's covered songs such as The Beatles' Hey Jude and Alanis Morissette's That I Would Be Good.
