English-speaking service for post-16 young adults with learning disabilities. Originally inspired by a parent and established in 1993. Seeks to provide core lifelong learning and vocational skills. The education programme includes literacy and IT skills, life skills and is now being developed to enable students to gain certificates. Music, art and drama also available. Funded by the Social Welfare Dept, means-tested fees and donations. Special needs include autism, cerebral palsy, dyspraxia and Down Syndrome, among others. There are 10 different nationalities in the student population. Student interaction with the community and vice versa encouraged. New facility opening in Chai Wan later in the year to offer residential and respite opportunities. The two apartments will be used to train students in independent living skills, and offer intensive care for those requiring higher levels of staffing.

Purpose-built special needs through school adjacent to KGV School. Caters for up to 60 children aged 5-19 with severe learning difficulties. The catchment area is the whole of Hong Kong. Implements the EQUALS curriculum (Entitlement and Quality Education for Pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties), in English, to provide a supportive but challenging learning experience. Well-equipped building with multi-sensory room, soft play area, library and hydrotherapy pool. Occupational therapy, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy available. School bus service providing door-to-door service. Each vehicle is fitted with a hydraulic lift.

Subvented, non-profit-making centre for children with learning difficulties from multinational, English-speaking families. Children up to 6 years can attend. Special needs children integrated with their peers and given the opportunity to learn through play. Caters for a range of difficulties, including attention problems, speech and language, physical and intellectual impairments, and autism. Expanding to over 60, including subvented and non-subvented places, following recent renovations. The new facilities will provide more therapy rooms and playrooms.

Small class with seven places, providing specialist education for primary-aged children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and a bridge into mainstream schooling. Multidisciplinary mixed approach that starts with a heavier emphasis on behavioural management and language/communications and moves to a more eclectic, real-life applied and balanced curriculum tailor-made to a child's needs. Caters for children from 5-11 years. Hosted by the Hong Kong Academy Primary School. A second class will open this autumn with a minimum of seven places at a different location, now being finalised. Also working with EMB on setting up Rainbow classrooms for Cantonese-speaking children. Community work to build more public understanding, including an autism awareness week in October.

Parent-inspired group which organises classes for English-speaking children from 5-18 years with mild to moderate learning difficulties. A primary class catering for 10 students from 5-11 years, hosted at the Korean International School. At the moment, secondary available for graduates of the primary class only. Horizons programme for students from 15-18 years, held at Springboard's Pokfulam centre. Designed to meet various specific education and life skill requirements to prepare students to be contributing family and community members. Seven places, now accepting applications for waiting list.

Small number of places. Student-teacher ratio of 1:1. Highly structured academic environment. Social, self-help and play skills emphasised. Uses Comprehensive Application of Behaviour Analysis to Schooling (CABAS) curriculum developed in the US. Intensive language instruction. Integrated after-school programme with typical peers. Mainstreaming support provided. Community resource centre and parent/helper training workshops.

Long-established subvented centre for special needs children up to 6 years. Expanding in September to 70 places. Caters for children with cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, learning difficulties, autism and hyperactivity, and where possible prepares them for entry to the regular school system. Separate programmes for Cantonese and non-Cantonese speaking children and parents. Private programmes available on Saturdays to help children on the waiting list and to fund regular programme. Includes occupational therapy, speech therapy, yoga, African drumming.
