Updated at 4.49pm: The Highways Department on Tuesday signed a $120-million contract with Cavendish Construction for maintaining the public lighting systems on Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island.

A spokesman said the contract would last four years, from October 2005 to September 2009.

It covered the management, operation, installation and maintenance of the public lighting systems on the two islands, the spokesman said.

'The works include road lighting, gantry sign lighting, roadside directional sign lighting and the associated network of cables, ducts and peripheral items,' he explained.
