April Snow (Korean) (IIB): Bae Yong-jun  and Son Ye-jin  play two people brought together after their partners' affair is revealed. Not reviewed

Embrace Your Shadow (Cantonese) (IIB): Joe Ma  directs Fiona Sit  as a poor girl who falls for a boy (Dylan Kwok)  from the wrong side of the tracks. Not reviewed

Gimme Kudos (Putonghua) (IIA): Huang Jianxin directs this comedy about a young man  looking for some respect. Not reviewed

Hinokio (Cantonese and Japanese versions) (I): A robot helps a little boy get over the loss of his mother and rejoin society. Not reviewed

The Longest Yard (IIA): Remake of the 70s prison comedy with Adam Sandler taking over from Burt Reynolds. Dumb but some fun. MS

The Skeleton Key (IIB): Kate Hudson  finds herself looking after an old man in a creepy house.  Not reviewed

General Releases

Bewitched (IIA): Nicole Kidman  and Will Ferrell  star in this updating of the old US TV show. She plays the witch, he plays an actor who takes on the role of Darrin in a remake of the show. Nice idea, lame execution, and Ferrell works overtime to save the whole affair. MS

The Brothers Grimm (IIB): Matt Damon  and Heath Ledger  play the kings of fairy tales who must tackle  some very real dangers when they are hired to protect a small town. MS

The Cave (English with Chinese subtitles) (IIA): Thriller set in  a Romanian forest, where scientists stumble on a cave system that contains not just a new ecosystem but an entirely new species. Not reviewed.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Cantonese and English versions) (I): Tim Burton  casts a magic spell over this adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, with Johnny Depp as the eccentric Willy Wonka. MS

Dark Water (IIB): Jennifer Connelly takes the lead in this remake of the classic Japanese thriller. There's a creepy new  flat to live in, a freaky little  girl to wander the corridors -  and a maintenance man who looks as if he's seen the devil. MS

Drink Drank Drunk (Cantonese) (I): Director Derek Yee  puts Miriam Yeung together with Daniel Wu. She plays a Hong Kong  beer girl while he plays  a down-and-out young man looking for love. PF

I'm Not Scared (Italian): A boy (Giuseppe Cristiano) stumbles on a boy chained up in a hole in the ground. The incident turns his world upside down. MS

Mean Spirit (French) (IIB): Architect Porel and his trophy  wife Chrystele are expecting  their first child. When Porel  is involved in a car accident  that kills a man the same day Chrystele gives birth, the victim is reborn as Porel's vindictive son. MS

Moments of Love (Cantonese) (IIA): Director Billy Chung's  love story involving 11 young people in five different romantic relationships. Starring Race Wong. PF

On the Mountain of Tai Hang (Putonghua) (IIB): Director Wei Lian's film about the war against Japan that follows commander-in-chief Zhu De and the Eighth Route Army to the battlefront. Starring Wong Wufu, Xu Guangming, Tony Leung Ka-fai. PF

Swing Girls (Japanese) (I):  A motley crew of Japanese schoolgirls find their calling when they're made to form a band. Feel-good laughs and a bit of toe-tapping from director Shinobu Yaguchi (Waterboys). MS

The Melancholy of Resistance: The Films of Bela Tarr: Retrospective of the avant garde Hungarian director known for  his opus magnus Satantango. Today-Oct 9, various times and venues, $50. Inquiries: www.hkiff.org.hk

Primo Amore (First Love) (Italian with English subtitles): A quirky love story about a dysfunctional couple. He wants his partner to be thinner, so she goes on a starvation diet. An Affair to Remember: A 1939 classic staring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The love-struck couple meet on an ocean liner and to test their love they promise to meet again in six months at the Empire State Building.
