Three days after the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland, Shanghai has again said a similar park in the mainland city would require central government approval.

There is growing expectation the city will get its own Disneyland, but city government spokeswoman Jiao Yang said: 'Shanghai hasn't received any approval for a theme park.'

Disney officials previously said their priority was getting Hong Kong Disneyland running smoothly, but Shanghai officials have made no secret of the fact they would like China's second Disney park to open in time for the World Expo in 2010. Land is believed to have been set aside in the eastern district of Pudong.

Disney president Robert Iger told The New York Times the company would put off building a park in Shanghai until it was able to screen more television programmes on the mainland.
