Sigur Ros

Takk ...

With their fourth release, Sigur Ros are saying 'thank you' in the same way  they do at the end of their gigs (with the word 'Takk' emblazoned on a screen above them).

After repeated listens of this collection of exquisite Orphean melodies, however, it becomes clear that it's we who should be thanking Reykjavik's finest.

Rather than straying from the ethereal template, Takk ... plays to their strengths. They retain the  ability to transport listeners to that region between dreams and consciousness, as on  the blissful Andvari.

The whole set resonates with the first stirs of morning, followed by a long exhale. And although each track is wrapped in a passionate austerity, the overall sound is somehow less glacial than before.

Glosoli is the perfect  reminder of what is so enchanting about Sigur  Ros. The falsettos curling from  Jonsi Birgisson's  lips are this time manifested in Icelandic, as the Hopelandic  gibberish from before takes a back seat.

Se Lest scatters warm feathers over any icy past, melting the heart with the help of a delightful outro courtesy of a brass band, reminiscent of   ( )'s  eighth track.

Soeglopur begins bathed in a soft light before building into an explosion of sun and stars. Feel your arm - chances are by now the hairs will be standing on end.

By the closing bars of the final track, you'll feel exhilarated as if by  the  soft, burning glow of a  welcoming hearth. It's all over far too soon.

There's nothing like Sigur Ros  under the sun, much like a snowflake that's unique and too perfect to even attempt to emulate.
