You know you've made it when America pays attention. A number of Hong Kong designers are about to enter the spotlight at Washington DC's prestigious Kennedy Centre as part of the New China Chic exhibition from October 1 to 16. The show is part of a larger Festival of China taking place in the US capital throughout the month, which includes ballets and theatre productions. The New China Chic will bring together works by some of the best ethnic Chinese designers from around the globe, including Vera Wang, Jeffrey Chow, Derek Lam and Anna Sui. Of the 17 names and brands, we can boast that more than a quarter of them are Hong Kong born or bred, including Barney Cheng, Vivienne Tam, Blanc de Chine, Shanghai Tang as well as Cambridge and Harvard-educated jewellery maker Lo Kai-yin (above). Oscar-winning art director for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Tim Yip will add his own touch to the event by decorating the Kennedy Centre, using traditional Chinese paper scrolls in the auspicious colour red.
