APA TO STAGE HIT MUSICAL The popular musical The Sound of Music will be staged from today until November 6 at the Lyric Theatre of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (APA) in Wan Chai. The timeless classic, with music by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, revolves around Maria, a spirited young woman who is unsure about her life as a nun. She leaves the monastery to look after seven motherless children and sings her way into their hearts. She also warms the heart of the stern, widowed father who eventually falls in love with the new governess. The Sound of Music will be staged at 8pm from Tuesday to Sunday, with weekend matinees at 2.30pm. Ticket prices range from $290 to $690 ($190 for students). JAPANESE TO PERFORM GREEK DRAMA Renowned Japanese theatre group Shizuoka Performing Arts Centre will stage Dionysus, a play based on ancient Greek dramatist Euripides' The Bacchae. It traces the conflict between Dionysus, the god of wine, and Pentheus, the king of Thebes. Pentheus refuses to accept Dionysus as a god and intends to have him captured and executed. Dionysus takes revenge by casting a spell on all the women in Thebes and forces them to go to Mount Cithaeron. Dionysus will be performed mainly in Japanese, with some English dialogue and Chinese and English subtitles. It will be staged today and tomorrow at 8pm at Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium.
