Strong winds buffeted Hong Kong yesterday as Typhoon Damrey blew past Hong Kong on its way to Hainan last night - the second typhoon in as many weeks to skirt the city.
The first No3 signal of the year was issued at 8.40am, and in the afternoon Damrey reached about 300km south of the city as it headed towards Hainan Island and Guangdong - where the storm is expected to make landfall this morning.
The Observatory said yesterday there should be no need to hoist the No 8 signal. The weather in Hong Kong is expected to improve early this week, with occasional squally showers expected today.
It also warned that the sea level may rise 70cm above normal high tide early this morning, which would flood low-lying areas.
A number of minor accidents were reported.
A 25-year-old man was taken to hospital in critical condition after the driver of the car he was travelling in lost control in slippery conditions about 9.15am in Lam Kam Road in Tai Po, and the vehicle plunged down a slope.
The driver, 46, was discharged after treatment.
