Meet the region's leading fashion designers
Born in Hong Kong and educated in Canada, Bonita Cheung Kit-man was exposed to the arts from a young age (her mother is a fashion designer and her father an architect). In Toronto, Cheung studied design and art at Branksome Hall for two years, then marketing at Ryerson University in the late 1980s. She returned to Hong Kong in 1993 and started her first label five years later. Cheung uses luxurious fabrics, beading and embroidery for her elegant evening, cocktail and bridal gowns. Her designs have been worn by celebrities such as Michelle Reis, Karen Mok Man-wai and Gigi Leung Wing-kei.
When did you launch your label?
I started with my haute couture label, Tassels, in December 1998, and launched my ready-to-wear label Bonita Cheung in 2002.
How did you set up the company?
I just dived into it. I studied marketing in college, but fashion has always been my passion. When it came time to start my own business, I knew it had to involve fashion. I opened my first showroom in Lan Kwai Fong in 1998, then moved to SoHo in 2002.
